BURNSIDE WEST DOMINATE SECOND DAY – 9 November 2024
Last season’s champion, Burnside West, dominated the second day’s play in their match against Sydenham on Sydenham Park, coming away with maximum points. The Premier women started their day well, with a T20 win over OBC, but then lost the second to Lancaster Park later in the day. Perhaps the biggest disappointment was out at Burwood Park, where the Division 1 boys couldn’t take advantage of their 1st innings lead and lost outright.
It was lean pickings also in the afternoon grades, with only two wins out of the six matches played. It was the two Cardinals teams that got the points: the Master Cardinals, a 26-run win thanks to a fine all-round performance from Phil Walker against Heathcote, and the Cavlier Cardinals, a 6-run thriller with a last over run-out bringing the victory over St Albans. The other stand-out individual performance came from Calvin Brinckmann with 5-44 in the Div5 Tamils loss to Halswell.
It was mixed results across the youth section, with the highlight being the First XI 5-wicket win over Christ’s College on Sydenham 2, led by an excellent bowling effort backed by Sam Johns’s unbeaten 50. Following their big win last week against St Andrews, the Colts made it back-to-back wins with one over St. Bedes thanks to Cameron Fairhall (95) and Liam Beck (50), who combined for a match-winning partnership of 128. But even that partnership was eclipsed by an opening one of 159 from Finlay Hill (53) and Nicolas Wilson (83) for the 2nd XI, who just fell short in chasing down St Thomas’ 300 total.

Burnside West could not have scripted the second day of their match at Sydenham Park any better as they dominated the home side in all aspects of play, depriving the home side of any chance to get back into the match at any point.
The day started with Burnside leading by 55 runs on the 1st innings, Sydenham still with three wickets in hand. However, the visitors polished off those remaining wickets quickly, with only Dylan McArdle (16) able to make any real contribution as Sydenham finished all out for 163, leaving themselves with a handy 30-run lead. The BWU 2nd innings then couldn’t have gone better either. Gibbs and Christie put on 84 for the 1st wicket at a good clip, rarely looking troubled and making the Sydenham bowling struggle to stem the flow. There was a small reprieve for Sydenham when Dylan McArdle picked up Christie’s wicket, and then Janett’s cheaply, but from 96-2, Gibb and Hay kept the pressure on. When Hay was out at 133-3 in the 26th over, Hay and Wilson accelerated the run rate close to 10’s to finally declare at 217 in the 35th over, leaving Sydenham a target of 238 at a little over 5’s.
To be fair to the Sydenham bowlers, several catches went down, and there was little in the wicket for them, compounded by the absence on the second day of their leading wicket-taker, Tom Agnew, who may have provided the variation needed. Allrounder Dylan McArdle again impressed with his 3-66 off 11 overs, but the quality of the BWU batting left little joy for the bowling unit.
The 238 target was always going to be a test for Sydenham, with its side fielding a number of debutants, new or returning, who will take time to find their feet. And it got off to a poor start with their top three, Paltridge, McCall and Irie, all gone inside the first seven overs with the score at 3-21. Aarush Bhagwat then stuck his head down and determinedly tried to right the ship. And for a period, he found support from Richy Faust, who made 15 from 22 balls before he, too, was out caught from a lofted drive at 51-4. It was a procession from there, with BWU always looking well on track to finish the job. Aarush was 8th out for a commendable 29 off 70 balls, as Sydenham slid to be all out for 82 with plenty of overs left for BWU on the day.
Whilst it was a poor second-day performance from the home side, take nothing away from BWU, they looked like a very strong unit that isn’t in any mood to relinquish their 2-Day title.

Sydenham 6/134 beat OBC 4/130
Our Premier Women defeated Old Boys Collegians in a close match at Elmwood Park.
Losing the toss, Sydenham was sent into bat. Sydenham looked in trouble, two down for eight after 3 overs. Beth Dodd then joined Emma Irwin at the crease. Looking steady, Beth made a great start with a couple of 4s and a 6 before nicking out caught behind on 18 off 12. Felicity Robertson continued where Beth left off, pushing through to 28 from 19 deliveries before being caught out at long-on. While the scoring slowed a little, Kate Craig (11) continued to accumulate runs with Emma, Emma making it through to 33. Kate and Emma’s departures brought sisters Rachel and Caitlin Davidson to the crease. Rachel and Caitlin did a great job of rotating the strike and contributing valuable runs. On her birthday, Caitlin ended up with 10*, Rachel with 11*, and Sydenham completed their overs with 134/6 to defend. It was a solid effort on a good pitch.
OBC’s chase started well with a four off the first ball. Two dot balls later saw Sam Petherick send OBC’s opener to the shed, bowled. OBC continued to accumulate, keeping up with the required runs. Requiring 18 off the last 2 overs OBC looked set to succeed in their chase with Kate Ebrahim well set at the crease. Sam Petherick picked up the crucial wicket to finish with 2/25 off her 4 overs. With OBC needing 10 runs from the last over, experienced captain Felicity took the challenge, restricting OBC 4 runs short on 130.

The Birdwood Premier Women – Match 2
Sydenham 68/10 lost to Lancaster Park 72/4
Sydenham moved to Hagley 4 for their second T20 match of the day. Sydenham failed to fire with the bat, all out for 68. Felicity Robertson top scoring with 21. Lancaster Park made easy work of the chase, getting through to 72 for 4 wickets. Elsie Duncan the best of the bowlers with 2/16.
The team have a week off for the long weekend before returning for two T20s on 23 November.

Sydenham was in a good position heading into Day 2 versus East Shirley. Start of Day 2 and they are two down and almost level with our first inning score. Some new faces swapped into the team; the aim was to knock over those last eight wickets quickly and cheaply and then chase them down! Despite the expectation that the pitch would slow down during the day (again), we were feeling confident!
Kasey Short opened up looking like he hadn’t been in cricket hiatus, unlucky not to get a wicket, while Ivon Bobby added a 2nd to last week’s nine overs Syd bowled in the 2nd innings. Spin was introduced with Zack Howe picking up four and unlucky not to get a 5th. Richard Howe struggled to get things right but got one when he did, and Gourav Jadhav packed up two late wickets as the East Shirly tail wagged again. Isaiah Prasad bowled economically, as did Nadun Seneviratne (in his Sydenham debut), who was unlucky not to have a wicket. The late tail wag took Easts to 187, a lead of 147. Noah Jefferson had a good game keeping in tough conditions. The pitch was slowing, but this still looked very chaseable!
Unfortunately, the chase was an ugly one. Nadun played some lovely shots for his 25 before missing a slow ball. Zack (18) and Isaiah (12) got starts and looked good but couldn’t press on. Both Zack and Isaiah were a little unlucky, caught after being victims of variable bounce after looking very comfortable. No one else got to 10, and we were all out for a very disappointing 78. So, flush that one and work hard this week to ensure a better all-around effort this Friday!

Division 4 Goats – LOST

The goats were looking to get their winning ways underway for the season against OBC Team Boon down at Centennial 1. We lost the toss and were put into bat and it’s fair to say we weren’t disappointed as the wicket looked and played exceptionally well. Newly promoted opener George and Joe started strongly punishing any loose deliveries and knocking around the good deliveries for sharp singles. George was the 1st to go with the score at 42 after 11. This set the tone for what has seemed to be our undoing this season… losing wickets in clumps. OBCs strike bowler ripping through our middle order on his way to a 5 wicket haul including a hatrick. After Joe fell for 28, it looked like an early day, if not for some “classical” falling over between some lusty clean hitting from Paddy and a fighting skippers knock by Jon, which got us over 100. Paddy finishing on 19 and Jon a crucial 10 not out, Goats all out for 108. We knew at the change of innings that if we got a couple of early ones, we would have the bowling attack to make it go close. however the catching curse of the goats let us down once again, 5 dropped catches isn’t going to win you a game defending a low total. We stayed in the fight until the end however OBC knocking the runs off in the 22nd over 4 down. Paddy bowling well and a bit unlucky with 2-35 along with Jesse Marks 2-20.

Division 5 All-Stars – LOST

The Sydenham Allstars kicked off their game at Centennial Park #2 against Weedons by winning the toss and choosing to field first. Under fair conditions, Weedons took to the crease and delivered a steady, determined performance, capitalizing on their opportunities to set a challenging target. Despite regular wickets falling, Weedons showcased commendable resilience and skill, ultimately posting an imposing total of 175/9. The Allstars’ bowlers fought hard, with Atherton, Hatcher, and Ungerer each claiming two wickets. Koster, Barnsley and Nixon claimed one wicket each. J Ward was excellent behind the stumps, securing two catches and executing a sharp stumping, while Nixon and Talanoa also contributed with a catch each.
Unfortunately, the Allstars’ batting innings left much to be desired. A combination of poor shot selection, impatience, and a noticeable lack of resolve resulted in a quick collapse. Their lineup fell short of the challenge, managing to put only a meager 38 runs on the scoreboard, leading to a disappointing first loss of the season. Full credit goes to the Weedons team for a well-rounded performance, displaying composure with the bat and ball.

Cavaliers Cardinals – WON

Cardinals vs St Albans Swinger at the Polo grounds. The Cardinals rocked up to a gleaming polo ground to take on the Swingers who have been niggly opponents in the past. Skipper Stokes made his first notable intervention of the afternoon by winning the toss and sticking us into bat.
Dou bros were consumed and Camo avoided cam 9 with can 7 good enough to see him open the batting with Jeremy. Jeremy was unlucky to get a decent ball without troubling the scorers, which brought Geo to the crease. The dual left handed combo set about dismantling the Swingers bowlers with Camo in particular in fine touch. Camo reached 42 and knowing he was about to retire swept to square leg where a controversial ish catch was taken. Geo kicked on,accompanied by Stokes, eventually retiring for 41. Smitty debutant Dave and Colin came in with licence to swing but too little effect before Stokes and Shanks saw the Cardinals through to what felt a slightly below par 126 on a quick outfield.
Smitty and Dave opened the bowling and bowled some tidy stuff keeping the run rate under control. Geo and AB were first change and made the initial breakthroughs, AB with his first ball being snaffled by Geo hiding in the trees. When Stokesy brought himself on the game was in the balance but the skipper duly delivered taking a game changing 4fer including a nonchalant grab from Smitty at deep mid off. Shanks provided some able support but the Swingers stayed in the fight and took the game to final over requiring 7 from 6 with one wicket remaining. Debutant Dave was handed the pill and with the Swingers number 9 not looking too confident they gambled on a risky two off the second ball. Geo did some outstanding fielding in the deep slinging the ball into Dave who whipped the bails off to seal a memorable Cardinals win.
Masters Cardinals – WON

Skipper James McKay won the toss and decided to bat on good looking Barnett Park II track.
In true Anthony Wild fashion, he dispatched the first ball of the game to the boundary.
However, the Heathcote opening bowers made the most of the seaming wicket and had the Cardinals in big trouble with Wild, Hardy and Ross back in the shed after a mere 4 overs – 9/3.
McKay and Walker settled the innings down – taking the score to 53/3 at drinks. The consolidation continued after drinks until McKay was on the wrong side of a quick single – run out for a solid 39.
With 10 overs to go the score was 95/4, however with wickets in a hand, a decision was made to step on the gas. The Cardinal batsmen duly obliged with 81 runs coming over this period. Clem Gibbons and Paul Rapley both displaying some very good ball striking – both batsmen finishing not out 29 and 26 respectively. Walker top scored for the Cardinals with a patient 56. Clement (8-0-2-21) and Stewart (8-3-1-17) were the best of the Heathcote bowlers. Cardinals 171/6 after 40 overs – general agreeance among the clergy that this was par score.
Gibbens struck early for the Cardinals in his first over and Guy quickly found an excellent line and length, bowling 3 maidens in his first 4 overs.
With the score 31/1 – Heathcote lost 3 wickets for a solitary run – Walker and Hannan among the wickets.
The fall of wickets did not deter Heathcote from taking on the Cardinal bowlers with some good ball striking form Duvall (33) in particular. However, with wickets falling at regular intervals, scoring 74 in the last 10 overs with only 3 wickets in hand, was always going to be a big ask. Heathcote eventually falling 26 runs short.
A very solid performance from Cardinal bowlers – Guy 8-3-1-24, Gibbons 8-1-2-34, Walker 8-2-3-22, Hannan 8-2-318. MOTM – Phillip Walker.

Masters Hospital – LOST

Hospital played Merivale Papanui “Pickles” at Sydenham 2 for a second week and were asked to bowl first. The first ball went for 6 which seemed an ominous sign but Hospital fought back restricting Merivale-Pap to 77/2 at drinks. After drinks there was a steady loss of wickets, including an excellent catch by Mark Crawford to get Hume (38) but there was a steady flow of runs too, the visitors 168/8 after 40. Top scorer- C Crimp 47.
Rahul Mukherjee 4-40
Hospital had a solid start, not losing the first wicket until 52/1 in the 17th over. The RRR continued to climb and Hospital began to lose wickets in an attempt to accelerate the run rate. Hospital, with only ten players, were all out for 103. Richard McKinley 26, Tony Danenberg 26. Special thanks to Tony and Andrew Reynolds for helping fill out the team.

Women Division 1 – LOST

St Albans/Lancaster Park 191 beat Sydenham 7/94
After two convincing wins, our Division 1 women had a much tougher match this week, losing to the combined St Albans/Lancaster Park team. Div 1 was very pleased to be playing at Hagley Park’s Nursery ground on a warm day. Winning the toss Sydenham fielded first. STA/LP made an excellent start, making it through to 104/2 after 18 overs. Scoring slowed somewhat from there with regular wickets falling, culminating with STA/LP all out with one ball remaining.
Sydenham, however, were unable to displace STA opening batter Lily Young (84*) who carried her bat. Highlights of the fielding for Sydenham were Emma Begg, new to wicketkeeping this season, taking her first catch behind the stumps and Greer Hill, in her first match of the season, confusing the opposition to take 3/29. Abby Laird also did well to switch from pace to spin bowling and was rewarded with 2 wickets. Safe-hands Julia Manton held 3 catches and Sandy Mitchell and Linda Pettigrew took one apiece, with Sandy’s catch being extra special after dropping the ball before. STA/LP all out for 191 for a well earned and very hot innings change.
Sydenham’s batting didn’t have the fire of last week, with STA/LP picking up last week’s top scorer Charlotte early in the chase. From there wickets fell regularly with slow scoring. In spite of this there were several highlights with Sydenham batting out their overs, making it through to 94/7. Abby top scored with 16, Linda with 15. Sydenham’s lower order did well with a good partnership between Jaimee Cartwright (11*) and Kyla Tilson, showing good decision-making and running between the wickets. This marked Jaimee’s last match for the year as she heads overseas. We’ve really enjoyed having her in the group.
Div 1 has a week off for the long weekend, returning on 23 November.
First XI – WON
Sydenham Youth had the perfect start to the Cricket Express 1st XI Championship bottom six playoffs with a convincing win over Christ College 2nd XI.
Captain Freddie Winsor won the toss and elected to bowl first on a humid overcast morning. It proved to be an important decision as the bowlers had the ball on a string and bowled beautifully in tandem and had Christ College in early trouble at 35 for 6 after 22 overs. The scene was set up by the opening bowlers of Potiki Hamilton-Morrison 2/32 off 10 overs and Cadell Durdin 3/25 off 10 overs. Sydenham were able to keep the pressure on through the rest of the bowling group of Noah Dean 2/24 off 8 overs, Thisum Lawrence 1/11 (6) and Josh Chapman 2/7 off 4 overs. The bowlers were backed up in the field with 2 catches held by the captain Freddie Windsor at mid off and 2 catches by Alistair Derry from behind the stumps with one being a fantastic diving effort low to his right side. Cadell was having a day to remember grabbing an excellent running and diving forwards catch from deep third and the Christs innings closed at 129 off 44 overs with a superbly taken catch by Conway Andrews at long on.
Just like the two opening bowlers, the opening batting pair of Potiki 10 off 14 balls and Sam Johns set the tone and laid the foundations nicely with a partnership of 42 runs. This was followed by a well constructed 5th wicket partnership of 36 between Henry Hood 21 off 26 balls also with Sam Johns. Sam played a crucial role for the team batting through the innings and compiled an excellent 50 not out from 100 balls. Sam’s batting temperament was outstanding as he respected the good balls with good leaves and solid defence and mixed his scoring shots up with hitting gaps, picking up quick singles and latching onto anything too short using his pull shot to great effect. Will Herd finished off the chase of 130 runs inside 30 overs with a nice little cameo 10 not out off 9 balls with a well timed pick up over deep mid wicket to seal the teams first victory of the season.
Second XI – LOST

On Sat 9 Nov the 2nd XI took on St Thomas’s 2nd XI on St Thomas # 1 ground. Having won their last 12 games in row, we new St Thomas would be a tough opponent. For the third game in a row we lost the toss, this time being asked to bowl first. A fine day and a hard dry pitch meant we weren’t too concerned with loosing the toss although we probably would have bated first as well.
With two of our opening bowlers away for the day, new players were asked to step into the opening roll. With a shiny new ball and a north-westerly cross breeze, controlling the movement proved challenging. St Thomas got away to a good start and had our boys under pressure. Playing his first game for the 2nds, Isaac Tutt came on to bowl some off spin and was rewarded with the first wicket and put the brakes on the run rate. From the other end, Nathan Blake bowled with high pace and accuracy to test the St Thoms batters. Our bowling innings ebbed and flowed. Toward the end of the innings, Yahya Shasawar bowled superbly to pick up 4 wickets. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to exert pressure often enough and contain the St Thomas batters. In the end St Thomas made 300 in their innings, although we gave them a helping hand with 67 extras including 51 wides and 8 no balls. The pick of our bowlers were Isaac Tutt (2 for 47 off 10), Yahya Shasawar (4 for 36 off 8), Nathan Blake (1 for 32 off 8), and Sam McDonald (2 for 27 off 4).
Chasing 300 is never easy. Our opening batters, Nick Wilson and Fin Hill started our team chase off superbly. They both batted with maturity, keeping out good balls and punishing anything short or drifting onto their pads. After 30 overs Nick and Fin were still batting, having put on 159 for the opening partnership. At that point we were very well placed in our chase of 300 and the St Thomas bowlers and fielders were feeling the pressure. Unfortunately, they both got out caught in the outfield trying to accelerate the scoring. Nick Wilson scored 83 off 117 balls while Fin Hill made 53 off 79 balls. Their opening partnership was the best I have ever seen in youth cricket, and I suspect may be a record for the Sydenham Youth club. With continued scoreboard pressure, our batting for the rest of the innings struggled to continue the momentum. Despite an excellent cameo from Lucky Lasiyal (21 off 17), we ended out 50 overs on 246 for 9.
Although this was a loss, the boys played well, and it was only small margins between wining and losing. With more accuracy in our bowling we should be well placed to move forward and record some good results in our upcoming games.
Third XI – WON
Match was won by default from St Thomas of Canterbury College

Colts – WON

The Colts faced off against St Bedes, looking to build from their confidence-boosting win against St Andrews. Winning the toss, Sydenham elected to bat with the view of putting a defendable score on the board and backing our strong bowling and fielding to defend the total. Cameron Fairhall and Daniel Barclay made a solid start, putting on 33 for the opening partnership before Daniel was dismissed for 13. Liam Kinzett (10) joined Cameron for another 30+ run partnership before being struck in front. Liam Beck then joined Cameron, and the pair put on a fantastic 128-run partnership for the third wicket in hot batting conditions. Cameron fell agonisingly short of a century – eventually dismissed for 95 in the 46th over with the score at 198. Liam Beck followed in the next over, but not before reaching 50 – a great knock. Harry Durdin (12 from 11), Oscar van Onselen (6 from 3, including hitting the first ball he faced for 6!) and Archie Nielsen (10 not out from 7) all scored at faster than a run-a-ball to collect 38 runs from the final 4 overs setting St Bedes 238 for victory.
In very hot conditions, the Colts struggled for consistent line and length early. But when they were on target, they were very good. Quinn Helms (1 for 18 from 7) got the early breakthrough before Reuben Williamson (3 for 23 from 5) broke a promising partnership. Louie Harris (1 for 18 from 3) and Reuben Williamson then collected back-to-back wickets with the score at 66/4 – both wickets courtesy of good catches from Liam Kinzett and Cameron Fairhall. Samuel Wild (1 for 28 from 5) then grabbed the fifth wicket thanks to the safe hands of Archie Nielsen. Lachie Smith was brought back into the attack and proceeded to knock St Bedes over, collecting 4 for 23 from 7.5 overs – all of which were clean bowled, showing the benefits of bowling full and straight even on an artificial wicket. Lachie finished the day with two consecutive dismissals, which means the first ball of his next match is technically a hat-trick delivery! St Bedes dismissed for 137 in the 34th over, giving Sydenham a comprehensive 100-run win. The boys are now starting to show their potential as a unit with strong back-to-back wins. Long may it continue.
The win now lifts Sydenham to 3rd on the table in the very competitive Colts grade and with the opportunity to move into 2nd place next week as the top two teams are playing each other
Year 10 – LOST
The team was excited to finally have a game and what a difference compared to our first game. The team felt like a team, we won the toss and chose to bowl first, that gave the team their first burst of confidence. The first group of bowlers understood their role and bowled tight line length to keep the pressure on. After 19 overs Lincoln High was 7/79, however that all changed after the drinks break and it wasn’t until 100 runs later in 30th and 31st over when the next 2 wickets were taken in quick succession and the first innings finished in 36th over with Lincoln all out and on 219 runs, with Extras being the highest scorer.
Sydenham’s batting line up wasn’t up to the challenge and collapsed to be 10/61, with the exception of Luke Griffith who was the highest scorer with 20 runs and so was rewarded with the Player of the Match for a solid batting effort accompanied with solid bowling figures of 1-4, Dylan Tullett (3-14) another stand out bowler well worth a mention.

Year 9A – LOST

Sydenham’s 3rd game of the season vs CBHS Blue was played on Spreydon Domain 2. Winning the toss, Sydenham’s captain Noah Green chose to bat first. Benji Williams and Kahn Stanbury opened and laid a good platform. They saw off the new ball and got to 29 before Williams was bowled. In came Will Johns who supported Stanbury well before he was out with the score at 62. Then a mini collapse with Sydenham ending up being 6-79 and then being bowled out for 113 in the 35th over. Stanbury was the pick of the batsman compiling a well earned 33. Other notable mention was Joe Wilke who stayed at the crease for an extended period of time for a solid 16. Overall, another poor performance with the bat from Sydenham.
As has been the case for the season so far, Sydenham bowled well and kept CBHS in check. But defending 113 against a very strong batting line up was always going to be tough. Pick of the bowlers were our 2 spinners – Benji Williams and Kahn Stanbury who both picked up a wicket each from their 3 overs whilst going for 6 and 5 runs respectively. Of note was a great catch by James Scott at just behind square. CBHS chased down our total 4 wickets down in the 28th over.
Thanks to CBHS for the game. It was played in great spirits. Big thanks to Marty Wilke for scoring (again) and to the rest of our fantastic parents who support our boys each Saturday. We have Christs College next on show day.
