WOMEN WIN AGAIN AND DIVISION 1 TAKE THEIR FIRST POINTS – 2 November 2024

The Championship team will have a break next Saturday after a tough loss, bowing out on the first day against BWU at Sydenham 3 in a match that they will want to move on from quickly. Fortunately, the other morning grades brought more encouraging news. The Premier Women celebrated their second consecutive win, this time against North West Women. The Premier Men are still well in their match against BWU, and the Division 1 men secured their first points with a first-innings lead at Burwood Park.

It was a particularly strong day for the women’s teams. Division 1 Women marked their season start with back-to-back victories, boosted by an impressive all-round performance from Charlotte Clatworthy, a former U16 player, who took 3-17 and then struck an unbeaten 63. Other standout performances included Felicity Robertson (50) and Sam Petherick (48) in a 105-run fourth-wicket partnership for the Premier Women. Youth player Henry Hood, filling in for Division 1, also excelled and contributed a solid 57 with the bat and taking 2-23 to help his side earn first-innings points.

In the afternoon grades, the highlight was a dominant win by the All-Stars, thanks to an unbeaten 172-run opening stand from Jaedyn Ward (71*) and Jacob Koster (83*). The Cavalier Cardinals also registered a victory.

In the youth section, the First XI had a bye, allowing several players to step up and support the adult sides prior to the start of the holiday period. The Colts and Year 10 teams recorded wins, with the latter benefiting from a default. Notable individual performances came from Oscar van Onselen (58) for the Colts, Nishchay Singh (50), and Oliver Jones (55) in the 3rd XI’s loss. Meanwhile, Finlay Hill (65) and Thomas Wedlake (57) both put up commendable efforts in their match against Shirley Boys.

The match remains very much alive for both teams, although last season’s champions, Burnside West University, has an edge after the first day’s play in the Premier men’s match on Sydenham 1.

With some early morning dampness still around, the home side won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. With the ball nipping around early, Sydenham’s two opening bowlers, Tom Agnew and Mitch Gardner, presented a challenge to the top-order batting, and made early inroads to have BWU on the back foot at 45-4. However, the middle-order pair of Jackson and Zohrab navigated their way through that period and then, as the wicket lost much of its uncertainties, crafted an excellent 86-run partnership that got their side back on track.

Archie Goodrick
Archie Goodrick

Tom and Archie Goodrick then had both players back in the pavilion with the score at 172-6 in the 46th over at which point BWU had been looking towards a score in the 220-230 region. However, they were also wasting no time in looking to accelerate the run-rate, and that ultimately pulled them up short. The introduction of the two Sydenham spinners, Srirag Harish and Taylor Irie, chipped away the final wickets as the batsmen attacked, with BWU eventually all out for 192.

Sydenham’s reply started shakily. Fraser Harding, in his final game for Sydenham, was dismissed for just 4, leaving the score at 15-1. Opener Matt McCall and Michael Robinson then steadied the innings, bringing it to 46-2 before Matt was caught behind for 22. Aarush Bhagwat was lost early to a superb Latham yorker, but Michael Robinson was still there looking assured, and together with Richy Faust, the pair got the score up to 99-3 and back on course.

Michael Robinson
Michael Robinson

However, Sydenham had another challenge, managing the lower batting order with two or three players unavailable on the second day. Michael was one of those and was out for 42 off 71 balls, and then four runs later, Richy (21) joined leaving the score at 103-5. Another fell quickly at  110-6, but Srirag Harish was again trying to hold the innings together and found a partner in skipper Mitch Gardner. Between them, they got the score up to 138-7 before Mitch’s wicket fell with a couple of left overs in the day’s play. Srirag was left unbeaten on 22 from 48 balls and will have a big part of play next week in attempting to whittle back BWU’s current 55-run lead.

The day also marked a farewell to Fraser Harding, who concludes his time at Sydenham after three years at the University of Canterbury. A popular teammate, the club extends its gratitude to Fraser for his contributions and wishes him success back home in Wellington.

The Birdwood Premier Women

Match report courtesy of Linda Pettigrew

Sydenham 186 all out (48.4) beat North West 104 all out (42.1). Northwest won the toss and elected to bowl; Sydenham was ready to pad up.

Umpires
Umpires Shreyash Kalyan and Brent Littmoden update with the two captains

After losing a few early wickets to some tidy bowling from Northwest, Felicity Robertson (50) and Sam Petherick (48) combined for a 105-run partnership. Julia Manton was unfortunately run out early on her Sydenham Premier debut. She’s shown great promise at training and in last week’s Div1 match, so we look forward to seeing more of her this year. A tough-fought innings on a wicket with variable bounce saw Sydenham ending on 186/10 after 48.4 overs.

Emma Irwin
Emma Irwin

A sharp bowling attack with pace from one end (Molly Loe on debut 1-12-6) and spin on the other (Kate Irwin 4-19-10) started Sydenham off by taking 4 early wickets for 15 runs. Northwest batters continued to show intent, with Ruby Makeham (45) taking to the Sydenham bowlers with a fair few boundaries. Some great fielding, tidy catches and enthusiasm from the Sydenham women saw Northwest bowled out for 104 after 42.1 overs.

Thanks to umpires Brent Littmoden and Shreyash Kalyan

Scott Insurance Brokers Championship

Sydenham was on the receiving end of a good old-fashioned thumping when the Championship team took on a strong BWU side on Sydenham 3. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, the side capitulated badly to be all out for its lowest score in many seasons. Admittedly, they had the worst of the wicket with plenty of sideways movement in the conditions, but much credit must also go to the BWU new ball attack of Millard, McDuff and Thomson, who exploited the conditions perfectly. With only opener Paltridge and no. 11 Hooper barely making it to double figures, and six ducks amongst the rest, the side fell all out for just 36 in the 19th over.

Oliver Garden
Oliver Garden

Although BWU lost a couple of early wickets themselves in reply to be 31-2 at one point, they took full advantage of the improving conditions over the day and finished with a massive 234 first-innings lead after amassing 270-8 off 43 overs. First Xi youth player, Thisum Lawrance (3-42), and Oliver Garden (2-74) were the main wicket-takers.

Nathaneal Paltridge
Nathaneal Paltridge

The Sydenham 2nd innings showed some modest improvement, with Nathaneal Paltridge scoring a run-a-ball 42, but apart from Tom McDonald (19 from 42 balls) and Cam Connolly (10 from 30), again double-figure scores were rarely threatened. With youth player Sam Johns injured early in the 1st innings and unable to bat further in either, the Sydenham innings closed at 101-9, giving maximum points to BWU with a first-day win.

Division 1

Match report courtesy of Richard Howe

Ever had that feeling that things just aren’t going to go your way? We’re at Burwood 2 to play East Shirley Gujarat Lions. It’s 11.15am, and the captain and the four youth players filling in on their Bye week are the only team members at the ground.  Others (only Cam Spriggs with a legit excuse) saunter in over the next 15 minutes, including one nameless person who arrived without whites – at least he had his keeping gloves. Fortunately, a spare set was found as the captain headed off for the toss.

Henry Hood
Henry Hood

The plan was to bat first on a pitch that slows over the day, but he failed, so into the field boys – not quite going to plan! Ivon Bobby opened up with youth player Noah Dean and took the first three cheaply, with Isiah Prasad continuing recent good form, replacing Ivon and picking up a further three himself, and Potiki Hamilton-Morrison picking up one when he replaced his youth teammate before being replaced himself by Henry Hood’s youthful off-spin. Then seven down for under 100 we were feeling good and keen to wrap things up quickly.  Then the  (Gujarat) Lions tail wagged.  They hit their way to 134 with the final wicket a neatly taken runout by Ivon.

Alistair Derry
Alistair Derry

Our innings got off to a quick start, but with Potiki out for 4 off 3 balls, that worrisome thought about things not going well was returning.  However, Manish Rawat started positively with a well-played 38 off 30, which created some real momentum, allowing our 4th youth player batter/keeper, Alistair Derry, to build into his innings.  His innings was very assured and only ended when a near roller from their pace bowler slipped under his bat, out for 18. Then we went from cruising to under pressure, a couple of 12s and a couple of ducks, and we are 8 down, still around 40 short of their total.  Fortunately, Henry Hood was batting well and took the score through to around 125 until Richard Howe was out LBW.  Ivon Cheruvathoor (5no) provided a solid defence (and one lovely slog sweep) as he and Henry took Sydenham to 1st innings points and beyond.  Henry was fantastic in scoring 57 off 52, giving us an important 40-run lead. Nine overs to bowl at East Shirley, and Ivon and Isiah took a wicket each to have them slightly behind and 2 wickets down. Maybe that bit of worry before the game wasn’t a bad thing.

Huge thanks to the young lads (and best luck for next game), you all contributed well. The next job is outright points!!

Division 4 Goats – LOST

Match report courtesy of Jesse Marks

The Goats were drawn against Merivale Papanui in the newly created EV Power Knockout competition for the afternoon grades. We knew this opponent well after narrowly losing to them in our last league game and were hoping to gain revenge. Playing on the same ground and pitch that looked to be breaking up we were happily put into bat after losing the toss. The innings started well, and we quickly moved onto 25 within the first 5 overs but Merivale pulled it back with a good display of accurate and bowling and made it difficult for our openers to rotate the strike. Their pressure finally broke the opening stand with Joe Taylor (21) getting run out attempting to get the scoreboard moving in the 19th over. The score at drinks 44/1 and with wickets in hand we needed to get the innings moving. Kyle Clark(16) started to show some intent with a few lovely sweeps to boundary and Sameer(8) hitting a beautiful straight drive for 6 we started to get closer to a defendable target. After a flurry of wickets George Wigley(23) and Dan Loughton(15) put on an important partnership of 37 but when Dan was run out to a piece of sharp fielding the rest of the wickets fell cheaply and the Goats were bowled out for 129, under par but we were confident it was  defendable as we had kept them to a similar score in our previous game.

Paddy and George opened the bowling and managed to keep things tight with George making the breakthrough with the score and 35 the game was still in the balance. The Merivale batters then decided to begin chancing their arm and managed to keep the scoreboard moving even with Oli Philpott bowling a beguiling spell of 24/1 from his 8 overs. The luck was with the opposition as they saw some close LBW appeals go their way and the aerial balls fall into gaps, the Goats couldn’t get the wickets needed to slow their momentum and they were able to reach the target in the 31st over.

Division 5 All-Stars – WON

Match report courtesy of Abe Atherton

In an electric start at Centennial Park #2, Sydenham Allstars won the toss and chose to field against Burnside. Atherton and Flowerday opened the attack with laser-focused precision, applying early pressure. Burnside, however, came out swinging, looking to send every ball sailing. The first change came as Chase Barnsley took the ball—and struck gold on his very first delivery. Joined by Koster, the pair maintained relentless pressure, though Burnside’s batters resisted until the 19th over. That’s when Cameron Hatcher stepped up, claiming two wickets in back-to-back deliveries, setting the game alight and swinging momentum back toward the Allstars.

Burnside reached the drinks break at 90 for 3, with the match hanging in the balance. After the break, the “spin twins” Hatcher and Ungerer took charge. Hatcher struck again, solidifying his claim as the self-proclaimed “King of Spin” with an unplayable line and length. Hatcher completed his 8 overs with 3 wickets for 25 runs. Koster, Atherton, and Flowerday returned to finish the innings, holding Burnside to 171 for 8 after 40 overs, a strong comeback that saw Burnside only add 81 runs for five wickets in the last 20 overs. Despite two sharp catches by Nixon and Ward, fielding miscues cost a few runs—an area to sharpen for the Allstars.

As Sydenham took to batting, Koster and Ward opened with flair, quickly earning the nickname “The Bash Brothers” as they pummelled Burnside’s bowling attack. Koster was a picture of elegance, sending drives racing to the boundary, while Ward’s cut shots sliced through the field, leaving Burnside helpless as they missed crucial fielding adjustments. The two ran brilliantly between the wickets, notching partnerships at 50 in just 11 overs, 100 in 19, and 150 by the 29th. Koster reached his half-century first, making short work of the bowlers, while Ward followed shortly after the drinks break. They continued their onslaught, driving Burnside to the edge before Koster wrapped it up with a final Five runs, leading the Allstars to victory by 10 wickets with a total of 172 in 31.2 overs. Koster ended with a stunning 83 off 81 balls, and Ward contributed a solid 71 from 106. A dominant display from the Allstars, marking a memorable win!

Division 5 Tamils XI– WON

Match report courtesy of Chidambaram Palaniappan

Tamil XI won the toss and decided to bat against Weedon’s at Bradford Park. Tamil XI top order collapsed quickly and early. Tamil XI were 4/9 runs at one stage. Then Mohanasundaram Kumar (Monty) (43) & John Emmanuel (8) recovered the innings with good rotation and defensive batting. Dinesh Raja (7), Arun Ravindran (28) & Niranjan Mani (14) delivered some good lower-order knocks. The TamilXI were able to put up 131 in 32 overs.

Defending the target appreciating the recovery and the decent defendable score. The opening bowlers from TamilXI bowled tight spells. Even though Weedons were not scoring much with the bat, TamilXI were not able to break into the wicket. Niranjan (2-24/8) gave the much-needed wicket break by picking up both the opening batsmen in his consecutive overs. Then other bowlers continued to break the partnerships in decent intervals. However, Guri from Weedon’s batted well and brought the game into a nail-biter with 36 runs required in 48 balls. The game went on with Weedon’s rotating and keeping the score ahead with extra balls. It came to 10 runs in 12 balls to 5 runs in 6 balls. Eventually, Tamil XI managed to wrap Weedon’s in 128 runs. And managed to secure the win by 3 runs.

 Cavaliers Cardinals – WON

Match report courtesy of Ben Larter

The Cardinals took on East Shirley with another toss, another correct call, and the Cardinals inserted themselves on a good-looking Burwood 3 pitch. Three quick wickets at the top of Larts, Bam Bam, & Camo had us rushing to get the pads on and swap umpires. Extras of 14 (later total would be 34) were the lipstick to the pig of our current scoreboard of 26-3 off six. Keza came in, battled, and enjoyed the game of cricket, avoiding a collapse, unleashing towards the end, and retiring for a solid 44* off 43. Smitty & Jeremy came and supported, but it was Stokesy who turned the game in our favour, pillaging 41* off 24 to close the innings out and give us a defendable total of 142

Queeny & Bam Bam opened the bowling, and Bam Bam (2-13 off 4)knocked over the first 2 with some fiery chirp. Easts then threatened for a bit with two batters getting to 23 each in quick time. Geo (1-17 off 4), Larts (3-8 off 4) & Smitty (2-6 off 1) then ripped through the order, with Smitty unlucky to miss out on a chance at the hattrick. Easts bowled out for 67. Excellent BBQ selection from Geo & extensive spread of beers from Smitty.

Masters Cardinals – LOST

Match report courtesy of James McKay

After losing the toss and being put into the field the Cardinals had OBC at 60/3 after 15 overs. Good bowling from openers Clem Gibbens and Chris O’Connell followed by Dave Fleming and Phil Walker had removed the dangerous Carrodus, Hastilow and Davidson while keeping the run rate in check. Enter Nigel Collins who started steadily and OBC at drinks 87/3. Captain Simon Murphy and Collins pressed on before Collins unleashed a torrent of sixes from all bowlers. Collins had to take a parenting retirement on 98, helping the Cardinals get the run rate back in check. Tight bowling to finish the innings saw Collins come back and add 10 for a very good 108, OBC 229/8 from 40. Pick of the bowlers’ Walker 3/23.
With rain in the distance, the Cardinal’s innings started in shaky fashion, and we were soon 22/3 after 7 overs. Grant Ross provided good resistance but a succession of wickets saw us 39/6 after 13. Anthony Wild (29 N.O.) and Ross (42) plugged on at a good rate and got through to drinks for 85/6. A late flourish by Gibbens  (24 from 15) was not enough; Cardinals all out for 138. Pick of the bowlers Collins 2/11.
Clem Gibbens adjudged Cardinals man of the match.

Masters Hospital – LOST

Match report courtesy of Matt Gilling

Sydenham Hospital played St Albans at Sydenham 2.

Hospital started well with opposition 55-5 after 20 overs, but a concerted effort by St Albans, and Hill (78) saw them finish on 164/9 with Hill falling to Jinto Mathews on the last ball. Bowling J Mathew 4-28 & M Gilling 2-45 and some sharp bowling by the others who were unlucky at times.

Hospital came out to bat but struggled with a regular fall of wickets, 7 for 20 at drinks. Wrik Mukherjee (24) and Paul Cottam (8) steadied the ship for a while. Hospital lost, all out 51.

Wrik Mukherjee 24* Paul Cottam 8. Thanks to Paul for helping with numbers this week and his excellent wicketkeeping.

Women Division 1 – WON

Match report courtesy of Linda Pettigrew

NWWC 7/141 (33) lost to Sydenham 3/143 (23.3)

Our Div 1 women had a good win over North West at Barrington Park. Unsure of how the pitch would play, Sydenham won the toss and elected to bat first. North West made a solid start with the bat, forming a good partnership two wickets down. Looking comfortable at the crease, Sydenham sought to defend boundaries and change up bowlers. The perseverance paid off with Charlotte Clatworthy breaking the partnership. With the main partnership broken, North West’s scoring slowed. North West finished all out with 141 with 2 overs remaining. Charlotte was the best bowler with 3/17. Sophie Harrison also had a good day taking 2/19.

Sydenham openers Charlotte and Caitlin Davidson made a great start, moving through to 55/1 at the 11-over mark. Charlotte continued to work the bad ball away, rewarding leg side wides with calculated pull shots to the boundary. Charlotte worked her way through to 63* in the chase, supported by Caitlin (16), Abby Laird (11) and Sandy Mitchell (12). Notable milestones for the match were Charlotte’s first 50 in the Division 1 grade and Sandy’s first match back after the birth of her daughter.

First XI – BYE

Bye week for the First XI boys

Second XI – LOST

Match report courtesy of Daniel Herd

The Sydenham Youth 2nd XI met Shirley Boys High 2nd XI at Clare Park. Faced with an often-tricky batting surface, Sydenham was looking to bowl first. Unfortunately, they lost the toss and were put into bat.

Fin Hall
Fin Hill

Sydenham focused on patiently building a defendable total with the boys going about this well. Fin Hill (65) and Sam McDonald (12) set the tone, with a 48-run opening partnership in 11 overs, until Sam was caught. Hill continued to mix timed aggression (hitting 6 boundaries) with strong defence and lead the team to a good platform of 85-2 after 20 overs. Will Herd (26) joined him, and together, they pushed on to 119 when Hill fell halfway through the innings. Sydenham needed another batter to step up. Thomas Wedlake (57 off only 60 balls) definitely did, supported by Charlie Crang (11), with their partnership of 61. Wedlake was the last wicket to fall in the 47th over, with Sydenham setting a total of 228.

Thomas Wedlake
Thomas Wedlake

With runs on the board, Sydenham felt confident. The Shirley top order batted well, and the Sydenham bowlers were a little wayward in very windy conditions. At 119-2 after 23 overs, Shirley was definitely on top. Strike bowlers Jamie Anson (2/26) and Nathan Blake (3-41) turned the tide in their second spells, reducing Shirley to 128-5. Sydenham turned to spin with McDonald (3-54) who began chipping away – and Shirley was reduced to 179-8. Unfortunately, and for the second match in row, Sydenham was unable to finish the job. Shirley reached the total with six overs to spare.

Third XI – LOST

Match report courtesy of Debbie Boulton

A busy week was had organising logistics to take the boys to Ashburton to play Ashburton College. Saturday arrived, sun shining, road trip here we come. We arrived to a pitch change, which was being cut and rolled just prior to starting. We won the toss and elected to bowl. Unfortunately, this did not bode well for us. We had a strong wind to contend with, as well as batsmen taking every opportunity they could. We did have some bright moments. Callum Walsh took 2 wickets, with Abdul Wasay Rashid, Utkarsh Singh, and Enda McMahon a wicket each. Ollie Jones took 2 catches, Ismail Sharifazi a run out and Utkarsh a stumping. Reshab Notiyal was our most economical bowler with 5 overs 30 runs and a wicket. They ended with a great total of 387 which we knew would be difficult to catch.

Our opening batsmen started really well, powering some great shots. Utkarsh scored a great 40 before getting out LBW. Nishchay Singh got his first 50, awesome job. Ollie got the high score of 55.

Abdul Mateen and Callum Walsh were also batting well when we had to finish 4 overs early due to rain.

This chase was always going to be difficult. However, the boys put everything into their batting with some ‘classy shots’ as described by opposition parents. We finished on a respectable 221/4, which on any other day could have been a winning score

Colts – WON

Match report courtesy of Paul Durdin

The Colts played St Andrews at St Andrews. With a pitch that looked like it may deteriorate later in the day, Sydenham elected to bat first after winning the toss. After losing an early wicket Cameron Fairhall (29) and Liam Kinzett (23) built a steady partnership before Liam was dismissed with the score on 60. The partnership set the platform for the batters to come. Liam Beck batted well for a nice 23 to keep the scoreboard ticking over before Oscar van Onselen produced a swashbuckling 58 off 31 balls (7x 4s and 4x 6s) to turn the game in Sydenham’s favour. A solid 37 from Louie Harris kept up the momentum before an exciting final wicket partnership between Bayley Gardner (31) and Reuben Williamson (10 not out off 7 balls) saw the Colts through to an excellent 255 all out.

Oscar van Onselen
Oscar van Onselen

The Colts started strongly in the field with Liam Beck taking a sharp catch at slip from the bowling of Bayley Gardner. St Andrews rebuilt and were looking strong before Cameron Fairhall pulled off a stunning catch at mid-wicket to break the partnership. St Andrews kept pressing ahead though before Lachie Smith bowled a set batsman right before drinks. Liam Beck then produced a fine spell of off-spin bowling collecting 3 for 17 from 5 overs, including a good caught and bowled and a sharp stumping from Daniel Barclay. Quinn Helms (2 for 22 from 8), Bayley Gardner (3 for 29 from 9) and Lachie Smith (2 for 16 from 5.2) grabbed the final wickets to seal a comprehensive victory for the Colts. St Andrews dismissed for 178 in 39.2 overs. It was an excellent confidence-boosting team performance by the boys.

Year 10 – WON

Sydenham won by default

Nicol O’Donnell commented – It has been disappointing not to play a game of cricket as a team this weekend due to the forfeit by Riccarton High. However, as a last attempt to allow our boys to play a game, even if not together, the parents shared contacts and reached out to others to make this a reality for those who wanted to play on a very windy day. So we would like to acknowledge the dedication of the parents and the players who offered to fill in for other teams.

Louis Southworth, who offered to help out Sydenham 3rd XI. And then three of our players filled in for North West. Fletcher Newlove filled for the 9A grade, versing our own Sydenham 9A team, and supported North West to victory in very hard conditions at Waltham Park that sawdust, tree seeds and branches blowing everywhere. Dylan Tullett and Zarnder O’Donnell filled in for the 9B grade team and both players contributed to the win over St Bedes. Zarnder retired on 50 runs off 49 balls and bowled three overs for 6 runs and 3 wickets, but the Man of the Match was Dylan with his bowling of 4 overs for 3 runs and 5 wickets. Congratulations. We hope for dry weather and no forfeits next weekend.

Zarnder O'Donnell
Zarnder O’Donnell

Thanks to NW for the game. It was played in great spirits. Big thanks to Marty Wilke for scoring and to the rest of our fantastic parents who support our boys each Saturday. We have St Thomas’s next weekend.

Year 9A – LOST

Match report courtesy of Callum Green

Sydenham’s 2nd game of the season vs North West was played on Waltham Park No1. Winning the toss, Sydenham’s captain Austen Grant chose to bowl first as it had been working for us this year.

Grant and Will Johns opened the bowling and their very consistent line and length kept the opening pair for NW in check. It wasn’t until the 13th over that Sydenham made the breakthrough with Ruan Diederiks getting the wicket with NW on 26. Great line and length bowling continued, but NW was not fazed, knowing that the pitch was making batting a little tough at times. Sydenham toiled hard and was rewarded now and again throughout the innings, but NW were sensible in their batting approach and, with wickets in hand, accelerated rapidly in the last 10 overs to eventually score 154/7 after being 6/78 in over 30. The pick of the bowlers was Benji Williams, with his great leg spin taking 1/11 off 5 overs, and of note was Kahn Stanbury’s 1/16 from 4 overs and James Scott’s 1/10 from 3 overs. The team’s fielding was excellent, with 3 runouts to Grant, Joe Wilke and Johns.

Chasing, Sydenham started well with Noah Green and Jonty Rutherford looking assured, but at the score of 20, Rutherford was the 1st to go LBW. Grant joined Green and they put on 40 before both went in quick succession, with Green unnecessarily running himself out trying to grab a quick single from the keeper. Then some poor shot-making meant Sydenham was quickly behind the eight ball. A short reprieve from Ruan Diederiks, with a quick 20, gave the team some hope, but consistent wickets from NW meant Sydenham struggled to get momentum. Kahn Stanbury’s stoic stay at the crease showed great application, but he was left stranded with no other partners at the end. The Waltham pitch was great to bat on in the afternoon, but Sydenham did not apply themselves and we were bowled out for 137 in the 31st over. Notable batting was Green’s easy-looking 27, Dieteriks quick 20 and Stanbury’s 40-ball stay.
